Proper clothing allows the face to dominate the
portrait, with all other elements being viewed as
complimentary. When seated before a medium
or dark background, colors that photograph best
are medium to dark tones of green, brown, rust,
wine or blue. Darker shades are more slimming.
Against a medium or dark background, avoid
wearing light color that approximate flash tones
such as beige, tan, peach, pink, white and yellow.
These colors not only dominate the portrait and
overpower the face but draw color from the face
and make the face appear unusually pale.
Bar shoulders or tops with "spaghetti straps"
often make the subject look heavier and distract
from the face. Bright colors such as red, orange
or pink can overwhelm the face. Designs and
bold prints should be avoided. Stripes, plaids,
checks and bold prints draw the eye away from
the face and do not photograph well.
Long sleeves are best for men, women, and High
School students. Long sleeve keep the eye from
being drawn to the flesh of the arms.
Informal portraits invite more variety in clothing,
color and style over formal portraits. Girls can
wear their favorite sports outfit, dress, prom
formal, shorts and jeans. Wear the colors your
enjoy provided they are color coordinated and
bear no large logos or prints, stripes or plaids.
Boys can wear jeans, casual or sports outfit, and
jackets. Clothing changes are encouraged by
Cynthia McIntyre to ensure that you will have lots
of different looks to choose from in your post
session viewing.
